In the late 19th Century, the decision was entered into for control of this world's population by means of the 8th Pair of Cranial Nerves (the acoustic). This method was entirely successful—to the extent that the alteration was widely dismissed only two years later—obliterated by the sound itself. Later, its producers discovered that an entire disbelief made it impossible to discontinue or rescue the subjects as were affected until—in the 21st Century—any new attempts were halted. By then there was no means for rendering an end to the soundings; for even death welcomed its comfort—no looking back.
